Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the option to contest specific calls from the official, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
